Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
