Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
